Despite the inclement weather, the 2014 calypso season got off to a blistering start last night with eliminations at the Krazy Coconut.
Some sixty-four calypsonians, including veterans Man Himself, Val ‘Young Bull’ Cuffy, Trend Setter, Haxey and two-time Calypso King ‘Observer’, competed in the kick-off round of the calypso competition before a jam packed and appreciative audience.
However while patrons were treated to an entertaining night of up-tempo, satirical and sometimes serious calypsos, the contest itself lacked intensity. Consequently the judges, scoring calypsonians on only lyrics ad melody, made light work of the twelve selected to move on to the quarterfinals.
They include Young Bull, Leona, Observer, Checko, Booplay, Beetle J, Man Himself, Chris B, The Triumph, Trend Setter, Lugars and new comer Wave.
JD, Sugar S and Alisha were selected as reserves.
Veterans like Lord Picky, General Natty, Dyno and the Intruder perished. Funny man Peter Prosper forgot his lines. But probably the biggest casualty of the night was Haxey. Returning to competition after an extended absence, he failed to impress the judges with a rendition that many of his say was “too scholarly and deep for the judges”.
The twelve moving on to round two of the competition will join last year’s 20 semi finalist to compete in the quarters which is scheduled for February 1st 2014. Twenty will be selected from the thirty-two (32) to compete in the semi finals carded for 15th February 1.
Calypso finals will be held on March 1, 2014.
